Ďumbier

Liptov

Ďumbier is the highest peak of the Low Tatras with an altitude of 2,043 m. On clear days, the summit offers a perfect panoramic view of all the mountain ranges of central and northern Slovakia. During World War II, battles took place on its slopes between Slovak partisans and retreating German forces. A monument to the fallen partisans was built at the nearby cottage in memory of these battles and the arduous winter crossing of the Low Tatras by partisans in 1944. Hikers may also encounter chamois, marmots, and observe the high-altitude flora. How to get there? There are several hiking trails that lead to the summit. If you have children or are simply looking for an easier route, take the cable car up to Chopok to make the climb more manageable. From the cable car station, the summit of Chopok is only a few minutes away and the route continues along the Low Tatras ridge, following the red trail. After about two hours (4.7 km), you will reach your destination. If you are a more experienced hiker, you can start the ascent in Demänová Valley, passing through Lúčky and Široká Valley to reach Krúpove Saddle and Ďumbier. Following the green hiking trail you will reach the summit in just over 4 hours (8 km). However, you should take into account an elevation gain of more than 1,000 m. In winter, the trail is ideal for ski mountaineering. Another popular route starts from the southern side of Chopok, at Trangoška. Follow the green hiking trail for 1.5 hours to reach the cottage, from where the route continues along the red trail via Krúpove Saddle to Ďumbier, where you will arrive in approximately 1.5 more hours. The route is approximately 6.3 km long. You can shorten the descent from the ridge by using the cable car from Chopok. Parking There are parking lots near the cable cars on both sides of Chopok.
